In reply to <a href="https://www.howdogardener.com/planting-guides/fruits-and-vegetables/tomatoes#comment-4480">Robyn Owens</a>.

Robyn - Glad you found the site informative! I like to plant my seedlings when they are anywhere from 5 to 12-inches tall, but before they get root bound. It looks like for your area that May 15 - July 1 is the best time to plant tomatoes. Be sure to "Harden them off" by placing them outdoors in partial shade for an hour or two the first day, 3 to 6 hours the second, and all day the third. By the fourth day, they should be able to handle direct sunlight for a few hours. It takes about 7 days to harden off most varieties before planting. If there is frost predicted in your forecast you will need to bring them inside. Hope this helps and best of luck with your tomatoes...Rick

Very informative Rick, thank you. So glad I happened upon your info!

May I ask you a question?
I live in zone 6a, and was wondering if I could set out very young tomato transplants in June? They are heirloom tomatoes that are from here in Kentucky, and just got the seed the first week of May so they are just now about 2 inches tall and just now getting their second set of leaves.
Should I keep growing them until they are bigger then set them out, or just go ahead and put them in the ground now?

Rick, this is good basic information for anyone wanting to grow tomatoes. The chart of varieties for different states is an interesting approach. I especially like that you included planting dates for both Spring and Fall. Thank you!
